Storm

"The nature of the storm"

 by Martin Binnington (2013)

A summer's day,
hot, clammy;
the calm before the storm.
Warm air feels thick
like invisible soup;
almost tangible.
White clouds are forming,
running together, spreading
outwards and up.
The world holds its breath.
It feels the charge
of nature unbalanced.
Clouds become darker, but
lit from inside, like
a 70s blacklight.
Floodgates are opened,
great torrents unleashed;
vengeful raindrops descend.
A blinding flash, then another.
Plasma bolts rip through
the fabric of the sky.
Still blinded, a rumble heard
that starts in the bones
then starts to grow.
A crash, a roll of
great planet-sized drums
being struck repeatedly...
Then silence.
The wind, which was whipping
leaves from the trees,
ushers spent clouds away.
The balance restored,
the rain eases up
leaving a smell of ozone.
The sun re-emerges,
like a parent come home.
No need to be frightened,
the storm is over.
